Have election for Barisan top posts: Kayveas
By TEH ENG HOCK
KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional should have an internal election to pick the top office bearers, proposed PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas.
He said it would be good to have a chance to pick the coalition’s leadership, especially the top four posts - chairman, deputy chairman, secretary-general and treasurer.
“It is better to have an election for Barisan; we can nominate names.
If we agree Umno becomes chairman, then okay.
If MCA or other parties get the deputy chairmanship, it is also no problem."
“The positions of secretary-general and treasurer should also be contested by other parties. Maybe there are parties in Sabah and Sarawak who are rich and can become treasurer,” he said.
Kayveas was responding to MCA Youth’s suggestion that the Barisan deputy chairmanship slot be expanded to two positions, with one of them held by MCA due to the party’s seniority and size in the coalition.
“Now there’s no election, so definitely the biggest party becomes chairman. There is nothing wrong with having a small election in Barisan,” he said.
He said the number of delegates for the Barisan election should be fairly distributed, with all component parties having an equal number.
He also said it was not fair to just allocate the second deputy chairman spot to MCA, as other parties should also have a chance to hold the post.
“If MCA has a new president, then he becomes the Barisan deputy chairman.
That is also not fair. There are presidents of component parties who have been there for more than 10 years and should be given a chance,” he said.
Kayveas said it was also time to have a Deputy Prime Minister who is a non-Malay, saying that Umno cannot run the country and form the Government on its own.
On Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s statement that Umno does not bully other Barisan component parties, he said there was a need to change the perception that Umno is a bully.
