MCA Youth Wants Swift Action Against Racist Political Leaders
October 17, 2008 17:50 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- MCA Youth wants the government to initiate firm and swift action against political leaders who do not respect the ethnic rights of all Malaysians. The wing in its resolutions passed at the MCA Youth 45th general assembly at the party headquarters here Friday also condemned the actions of certain Umno leaders who had issued statements which were racist in nature as well as "extremist" government officers who curtailed the freedom of holding ethnic cultural and entertainment activities."Their actions disrupts race relations in the country, which has various races, religions and cultures. The MCA Youth calls on the authorities to take stern action against these extremists who disrupt the nation's harmony," the wing said in its resolution. In another resolution calling for the promotion of greater freedom, the Youth Wing urged the government to review the Internal Security Act (ISA) and Printing and Printing Presses Act as these two Acts gave powers to the police to detain anyone without trial and limited freedom of speech. The Youth wing also wanted the government to establish a systematic mechanism that would lessen bureaucratic red tape while disciplining civil servants in a bid to curb the menace of corruption as an effort to strengthen the nation's competitive capabilities and integrity. On the economy, the Youth Wing called on the Finance Ministry and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to execute an economic action plan to overcome the global economic crisis to boost confidence of local as well as foreign investors in the nation's economy."In view of the world economic status, all current economic plans must be reviewed and plans which are not business friendly must be disbanded."We have to relax regulations on equity ownership, identify weaknesses and eradicate unfairness. Efforts must also be undertaken to do away the Industrial Coordination Act (ICA) 1975 to allow Malaysia to be competitive in the international market," the Youth wing said.In an effort to protect Small-and-Medium Entreprises and encourage the spirit of entrepeneurship amongst low-wage earners, the MCA Youth called on the government to introduce a low-interest, micro-credit loan scheme for businesses which had a good track record on loan repayment.Touching on education, the Youth called on the government to institute a mechanism to develop Chinese-type national schools (SJK (C)) systematically and to ensure that all primary schools regardless of status receive equal assistance and budgets. To establish greater equality among all education institutions, it also asked for Chinese private schools be acknowledged as part of the national education system and be given funding to develop human capital in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's vision."We also call on the government to be fair and transparent in selection of students for JPA scholarships. This is to further encourage excellent students to contribute to the nation's human capital," the MCA Youth added. At party level, the wing suggested for an amendment of the party constitution to allow the Youth Wing elected representatives to vote in the picking of national leaders besides allowing the Youth wing to have a say in the party's decision making process. The Youth wing also wanted its constitution amended to reduce the eligibility age for Youth members from the current 45 years to 40 years.
