Allow secret ballot for top posts, says Ku Li
GUA MUSANG: Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah wants division nominations for the party's top posts to be conducted by secret ballot instead of by a show of hands.
He said there were proposals by many delegates to allow nominations to be done through secret ballots but they were over-ruled.
The Kelantan prince who has offered to contest the party president's post, claimed it was against regulations, bordering on being unconstitutional, to disallow secret ballots for nominations to top posts.
Under Umno’s quota system, candidates aspiring for the post of party president, require 58 nominations.
Since the divisional meetings commenced on Oct 9, Tengku Razaleigh has yet to garner a single nomination, although he remains optimistic after an extensive nationwide tour.
Former Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said the constitution is silent as to whether secret balloting was mandatory during nominations.
Radzi said secret balloting, however, is legally compulsory when Umno delegates select the divisional office bearers such as the division head and when the national delegates choose a president, deputy president, three vice-presidents and supreme council members.
There are 123 Umno divisions which have yet to hold their delegates meetings, Tengku Razaleigh said after simultaneously opening the Gua Musang division Youth, Wanita and Puteri wing meetings here.
